In Memoriam of:

Alan Pavel, M.D.
July 2, 1933 - October 2, 2004

Occasionally, good physicians come along who are also superb teachers.  When they do, their impact on the community is enormous.

Alan Pavel, M.D. was one of those extroadinary Physician/Teachers. He was able to impart knowledge to his students and his peers using his prodigious teaching skills but he influenced us even more by the standard he set as a practicing physician and orthopedic surgeon.

Dr. Pavel practiced orthopedic surgery in Hawaii beginning in 1965 and was a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii beginning in 1970.  He served as Chief of Orthopedic Out-Patient and Surgery Services at The Queen's Medical Center and was a staff member and consultant at Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children; Wahiawa General Hospital; Kuakini Medical Center; St. Francis Medical Center; Tripler Army Medical Center; and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. He also served as the Director of Orthopedic Surgical Education at The Queen's Medical Center while maintaining his own private orthopedic surgery practice.

Dr. Pavel was born in New York City and raised in Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University with a B.S. degree in 1955 and obtained his M.D. from the University of Chicago School of Medicine in 1958.  After he completed a one-year surgical internship at New York Hospital, Dr. Pavel served as a Medical Officer with the U.S. Navy for two years.  After his military service, Dr. Pavel finished his residency training at New York Hospital in fracture service, Bronx Veteran's Administration Hospital in orthopedic service and Memorial Hospital for Cancer & Allied Diseases in bone tumor service. During his residency, Dr. Pavel also served as an instructor in surgery at Cornell University College of Medicine.

In 1970 Dr. Pavel was one of the original founders of Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii, Inc. which is now known as Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii, LLP - a for-profit organization that consists of some of the brightest and most experienced orthopedic physicians in the nation.

He contributed positively to our growth as a company committed to continuous improvement.  His wise counsel and his unequivocal dedication to the ethics of his profession will be sorely missed.
